Abstract

Women writers have used literature as a tool to explore the societal standards. Their works repeatedly investigate the standards set for women by the society and thus expose the vanity of societal norms. Their writings expose the fragmented psyche of female characters and their struggle against patriarchy. The novels of Shashi Deshpande and Anita Nair are few samples that bring to limelight the predicament of women in the Indian society. Their novels offer a strong critique of patriarchal society and give voice to the experiences of women in the Indian context.
