Abstract

Agriculture is at the core of the Indian economy and most of population depends on agriculture for its livelihood. In India, 65 percent of the people are directly and about 55 percent of the workforce is engaged in agriculture and allied activities and contributing significantly to GDP. Rural development and the development of the Indian economy cannot be imagined without agricultural development, so Sustainable Agriculture is important for promoting rural development of India. Sustainable Agriculture is an integrated system of farming where the conservation of the environment is at the central stage while expanding the optimal use of natural resources to satisfy people's needs through the implementation of economically viable solutions at the farm level. It serves the purpose of holistic development that must be profitable to all stakeholders equitably. The Indian agriculture sector has a share of 16 percent in the country’s GDP FY2024. The sector has been floating, which is evident from the fact that it has registered an average annual growth rate of 5 per cent at constant prices over recent years (FY2017-2023).
