Abstract

Women’s subordination is a widely prevalent phenomenon across the world, inspite of differences in its extent and form. In India too, women have been the victims of massive rights violations. Historically, women in India have been facing Brahminical oppression for long. Compared to their male counterpart, women were in a much inferior social position in the Brahminical social order. As Uma Chakravarti has pointed out that Brahminical patriarchy’s obsessive concern with controlling female sexuality has survived across all casts groups, high and low.
