SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY: PROSPECTS AND ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS

Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary field that combines principles of biology, engineering, and computational science to design and construct new biological parts, devices, and systems or to redesign existing biological systems for useful purposes. The field holds vast potential across various sectors, including medicine, agriculture, energy, and environmental remediation. Innovations such as engineered microbes for biofuel production, synthetic gene circuits for disease treatment, and biosensors for environmental monitoring highlight the transformative capabilities of synthetic biology. However, with these advancements come significant ethical considerations, including concerns about biosafety, biosecurity, ecological disruption, intellectual property, and the equitable distribution of benefits. The deliberate manipulation of life at a fundamental level raises philosophical questions about human intervention in nature. This review explores the scientific prospects of synthetic biology while addressing the ethical, legal, and social implications that accompany its rapid development. A balanced and inclusive approach to governance is essential to harness the benefits of synthetic biology while mitigating potential risks.Published
