The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 marks a transformative shift in Indian democracy by empowering citizens with transparency and accountability in governance. As a tool against administrative opacity and corruption, the RTI Act enables individuals to access information from public authorities, fostering participatory democracy and strengthening fundamental rights under Article 19(1)(a) (Freedom of Speech) and Article 21 (Right to Life and Personal Liberty). This paper examines the evolution, implementation, and impact of the RTI Act in India, analyzing key judicial pronouncements that have expanded its scope while addressing challenges like bureaucratic resistance, privacy concerns, and delays in information dissemination. It also evaluates the role of Information Commissions and civil society in safeguarding this right, alongside emerging debates on digital transparency and proposed amendments. By assessing the RTI Act’s successes and limitations, the study highlights its role in redefining citizen-state relations and suggests reforms for more effective governance accountability.Published
