Abstract

This paper explores the intricate relationship between constitutional morality and democratic values within the Indian context. It argues that constitutional morality, understood as fidelity to the foundational principles enshrined in the Constitution, is essential for the thriving of democracy in India. The analysis delves into the historical evolution of constitutional values, highlights key judicial interpretations, and examines contemporary challenges posed by populism, majoritarianism, and erosion of institutional integrity. By assessing the role of civil society, political actors, and the judiciary in upholding constitutional morality, this study emphasizes the necessity of fostering a culture of respect for constitutional principles to ensure the sustenance of democratic values. Ultimately, it advocates for a renewed commitment to constitutional morality as a bedrock of democratic governance, essential for navigating the complexities of modern Indian society.
