Abstract

There is much room for reconsidering computational models, ethical frameworks, and cognitive architectures at the nexus of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). IKS, which has its roots in ancient philosophies, languages, logic, and the sciences, provides perspectives that go beyond accepted forms of knowledge representation and judgement. This chapter examines how key ideas from IKS, including Paninian grammar, Ayurveda (life sciences), Mimamsa (hermeneutics), and Nyaya (logic), might guide and improve the creation of AI technology. To draw comparisons with current AI issues, such as symbolic reasoning, natural language processing, and machine ethics, it critically analyses the ontological and epistemological frameworks of IKS. Furthermore, the chapter explores the ways in which intelligent systems might be employed to preserve, digitise, and distribute traditional Indian knowledge.
