Abstract

Bhishma, one of the most enigmatic figures in the Mahābhārata, embodies a paradox that challenges conventional heroic archetypes. Though born to rule and possessing unmatched wisdom, strength, and loyalty, Bhishma renounces the throne and becomes a vassal to a crumbling dynasty. This paper explores the psychological, political, and dharmic dimensions of Bhishma’s vow of celibacy and non-sovereignty, and how these choices contribute to the larger tragic arc of the Mahābhārata. Drawing on classical exegesis, modern psychoanalytic theory, and political philosophy, this article interrogates the enduring tension between agency and duty, detachment and involvement, in Bhishma’s life. Ultimately, Bhishma’s tragedy lies not in personal failure but in the moral contradictions of his time and his role as the reluctant architect of dynastic decline.
