Abstract

As global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion intensify, education systems are increasingly expected to equip learners with the competencies to address these issues. Central to this transformation is the preparation of educators capable of integrating sustainability into their teaching practices. This chapter explores the critical role of teacher training in fostering green skills and sustainability competencies among students. It examines theoretical frameworks for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), identifies core green educator competencies, and discusses effective models of pre-service and in-service teacher training. Drawing on global examples and best practices, the chapter emphasizes experiential learning, critical pedagogy, and interdisciplinary approaches as essential elements in preparing green educators. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for policy-makers, teacher training institutions, and educational leaders committed to embedding sustainability into teacher education.
