Abstract

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is increasingly recognized as a key ingredient for success in higher education, complementing the traditional focus on cognitive intelligence. Beyond grades and test scores, EI reflects the ability to understand, manage and use emotions effectively. This paper focuses on how EI shapes both academic performance and mental well-being, making it an essential resource for navigating the challenges of university life. Drawing on different theoretical perspectives, including ability, mixed and trait models, the discussion shows that students with higher EI are often more resilient, socially connected and emotionally balanced. These qualities not only improve learning outcomes but also reduce the risk of anxiety, burnout, and dropout. In the workplace, EI translates into leadership, teamwork, and career satisfaction, underscoring its long-term value beyond education. At the same time, the field faces challenges such as inconsistent definitions and cultural variations in measurement. Strengthening research and integrating EI into teaching practices can help students thrive academically, emotionally, and professionally.
