Abstract

Colleges and universities have reported record numbers of students experiencing psychological discomfort in recent years. In 2008, for instance, 95% of campus psychological counselling centers said that students' mental health problems had significantly increased. With over 11.9% of college students experiencing an anxiety disorder, anxiety disorders are the most common mental issues within this demographic. With incidence rates ranging from 7% to 9%, depression is another prevalent mental health issue among college students. There are various types of mental health disorders like depression, anxiety and eating disorders which in long term led to suicide sometimes. This chapter will cover all the causes, types of mental health disorders, mental health challenges or etiological factor in collegiate students and strategies to manage mental health challenges.
