Abstract

This chapter aims to discuss the history of Indian ECCE from ancient times to the contemporary era, highlighting the major transitions that have occurred. The beginnings of Indian Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) are marked by influences from culture, traditions, and morals that date back to ancient times. Various Indian philosophers and educators have contributed to the development of ECCE. In addition, the Government of India launched various programmes to reform and enhance ECCE, such as the Five-Year Plans, Integrated Child Development Scheme, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, National ECCE Policy, National Education Policy, and National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage. Currently, the focus of Indian ECCE centres remains on universal access, inclusion, high-quality ECCE, strengthening Anganwadis, and introducing digital innovations to achieve the holistic development of children.
