Abstract

This article examines how gender norms are constructed in early‑childhood media, comparing the U.S. based Dora the Explorer with India’s Chhota Bheem. Through content and critical discourse analysis, the study highlights how media targeted at preschoolers conveys powerful, often contradictory messages about gender roles. While Dora initially offered a progressive female protagonist, later iterations showed regression into stereotypical femininity. In contrast, Chhota Bheem conforms more to normative masculine ideals, with female characters playing supportive or ornamental roles. These gendered narratives have connection with early childhood socializing. The paper concludes with recommendations for more inclusive content creation and suggests avenues for further research.
