In the rapidly evolving landscape of education, leadership stands as the compass that directs teacher education toward excellence, innovation, and relevance. Without effective leadership, teacher preparation risks stagnation in the face of global and local challenges. This chapter explores the significance of leadership in shaping teacher preparation programs, arguing that leadership is not an optional dimension but a vital force driving transformation, inclusivity, and quality in education. It begins with a conceptual framework, distinguishing between leadership and management, and highlighting transformational, distributed, instructional, and servant leadership theories as foundational for guiding teacher education institutions. The discussion then turns to the interconnections between leadership and teacher education, emphasizing its dual role as both a site of leadership development and a system requiring strong leadership to thrive. The chapter explains the importance of leadership in empowering teacher educators, building student-teacher capacity, ensuring accountability, and aligning teacher education with global priorities such as the Sustainable Development Goals and national frameworks like India’s NEP 2020. Challenges including resistance to change, lack of training, bureaucratic barriers, and contextual variations are critically examined. Finally, the chapter presents a forward-looking vision, positioning teacher education as a leadership incubator that embraces digital transformation, collaborative models, research, and global citizenship. Practical recommendations are offered for policymakers, teacher educators, institutions, and student-teachers, closing with the guiding belief: “Leadership in teacher education is not just about preparing to teach, it is about preparing to lead the future”.Published
