Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) positions learning as a catalyst for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by equipping individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to address complex global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and resource depletion. Within this context, learning communities (LCs), including professional learning communities (PLCs) and faculty learning communities (FLCs), have emerged as powerful mechanisms for institutional transformation. Unlike traditional models, sustainable LCs emphasizes inclusivity, transparency, collaboration, and active engagement, fostering reflective professional development and enduring pedagogical change. They provide safe, supportive, and dialogical spaces where educators, students, and families collectively co-create solutions, share practices, and build trust, thereby promoting inclusive education and enhancing student outcomes. Empirical studies demonstrate that LCs positively impact professional growth, leadership capacity, and community building, while projects such as INCLUD-ED highlight their role in advancing social cohesion and equity. Key benefits include shared responsibility, improved teaching and learning practices, supportive environments, and the integration of technology to strengthen collaboration. However, challenges such as leadership commitment, structural constraints in higher education, and sustainability remain barriers to long-term success. To address these, strategies include institutionalizing LCs within organizational structures, fostering double-loop learning to critically re-examine norms and values, ensuring inclusive participation, and embedding trust and psychological safety. Overall, LCs serve as essential vehicles for sustainable educational transformation, enabling reflective, collaborative, and equity-driven practices that align with global educational and social development agendas.Published
