ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND CHALLENGES OF AI ADOPTION IN EDUCATION 5.0

Abstract

Education 5.0, the next paradigm for educational transformation, emphasizes collaboration and the learning experience of everyone with capabilities offered by intelligent machines (Yu and Yu, 2023). Education 5.0 creates an environment where educators and learners can work with knowledge machines (AI) as a team. AI aims to replicate human capabilities such as reasoning (Nguyen et al., 2023). This raises questions about providing knowledge that is productive and supports the workforce and the knowledge economy. Education 5.0 emerged as a human-centric model for the cosmopolitan society of the future, representing a constellation of concepts that focus on changing expectations for global citizens ready to embark upon the 4th Industrial Revolution and embrace interconnectivity and rapid change with resilience. The adoption of AI in educational settings remains limited by concerns related to data privacy, bias and fairness, impact on the pedagogical process, accessibility and inclusivity, responsibilities and accountability, ethical design, transparency, educational groups, adoption drivers, educators’ professional identity and pedagogical shift, emerging trends, and other considerations that span academic, industrial, and governmental sectors. As AI technologies increasingly integrate into educational environments, issues related to data privacy, bias, and equity emerge as critical concerns. This paper explores the ethical considerations and challenges associated with the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, emphasizing the importance of responsible implementation in the context of Education 5.0. The paper also examines how AI-driven tools can inadvertently reinforce existing social inequalities through biased algorithms and unequal access, potentially exacerbating educational disparities, as well as the ethical implications of data collection, storage, and usage, highlighting the need for transparent policies that safeguard student information. Ultimately, this study advocates for a balanced approach to AI integration, fostering innovation while upholding core ethical values in the evolving landscape of education.
