Abstract

The increasing cultural diversity in classrooms worldwide necessitates the development of cultural competence among educators. Cultural competence, encompassing self-awareness, social skills, and diversity-related behaviours, is pivotal in fostering inclusivity and equity in education. This study explores the concept of cultural competence within teacher education, examines barriers to its implementation, and identifies strategies to enhance it among prospective teachers. Key challenges include institutional gaps, pedagogical hurdles, and personal biases, particularly in the Indian context. Current trends such as multicultural education frameworks, diversified teaching forces, and field experiences in diverse settings highlight efforts to address these challenges. Strategies including inclusive curriculum design, experiential learning, faculty development, and the use of technology are proposed to enhance cultural competence. These measures aim to equip educators with the tools to create inclusive classrooms, promote global citizenship, and improve academic outcomes. The findings emphasize the need for systemic changes in teacher education to prepare teachers for culturally diverse classrooms and ensure equitable learning environments.
