Language plays an essential part in human’s life. Learning a language in general, learning a second language in particular undergoes a crucial as well as a natural process. In English Language Teaching, the theorists and educators elevate a high platform for the role of language learners. Many methods and approaches are developed by considering the learners as its core in the pedagogy. The effectiveness of language learning heavily depends on the learners’ background i.e. the educational and demographic. There are numerous factors decide the effectiveness of language learning. It includes L2 learners’ emotions, beliefs, notions, attitude, aptitude, intelligence, age, gender, mother tongue, family background, etc. This paper aims to focus on the rural tertiary level non- English major Indian learners i.e. Tamil Programme ESL learners of Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur. It aims to study their interest, notions, beliefs and expectations of English language learning and teaching.Published
