Abstract

The shift to online learning in higher education, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, has changed how students learn across the world. While digital platforms provide greater access and flexibility, they also create challenges for students’ mental health and academic engagement. This article examines psychological effects such as stress, anxiety, loneliness, and mental overload, and how these issues affect students’ motivation and participation. It reviews recent studies (2018–2025) to give a balanced view of both the benefits and mental health risks of online learning. The findings show that long screen time, less social contact, and the need for self-discipline can increase emotional strain and reduce engagement. However, support from institutions, personal coping skills, and resilience can help reduce these negative effects. The article also offers suggestions to improve student well-being in online learning environments.
