Abstract

This chapter offers a critical review and strategic blueprint for advancing the psychological defense against emotional manipulation (EM), a pervasive mechanism of power and control in systemic and interpersonal contexts. Recognizing that established literature, while effective in identifying core tactics like gaslighting and guilt-tripping, has been limited in translating descriptive findings into scalable, protective strategies, this review proposes a comprehensive Integrated Agenda structured around three synergistic pillars: Research, Education, and Prevention (R-E-P). The Research Agenda calls for a pivot toward advanced, longitudinal methodologies and psychobiological investigations to precisely map the cognitive and neurological underpinnings of both emotional vulnerability and resilience, with a critical emphasis on understanding and countering emerging digital forms of coercion. The implementation of this agenda is founded upon the Educational Agenda, which necessitates fostering deep manipulation literacy and professional competency through targeted, skill-based curricula. This moves beyond rudimentary awareness to equipping diverse populations with actionable techniques in emotional regulation and boundary setting. Concurrently, the Prevention Agenda prioritizes the design and validation of proactive intervention programs focusing on core psychological buffers, namely assertiveness, mindfulness, and emotional regulation, to fortify psychological resistance at the individual and systemic levels.
