Abstract

Assertiveness and emotion regulation are two interrelated psychological constructs that play critical roles in interpersonal effectiveness and well-being. While assertiveness enables individuals to express needs and boundaries respectfully, emotion regulation allows individuals to manage emotional arousal in socially challenging contexts. This paper synthesizes foundational, clinical, and applied literature demonstrating that emotion regulation facilitates assertive behaviour, and that successful assertive communication further strengthens regulatory capacity. Distinctions between specific emotion regulation strategiesparticularly cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppressionare discussed, along with developmental and clinical implications. Finally, an integrated model relevant to educational and organizational environments is proposed, highlighting the importance of training protocols that combine both skill domains.
