FROM MARGINALIZATION TO EMPOWERMENT: DALIT COMMUNITIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

The study examines the transformative potential of empowering Dalit communities in environmental conservation efforts. Despite of being marginalized and historically excluded from mainstream environmental discourse, Dalit communities possessed unique perspectives and traditional knowledge systems that are invaluable for sustainable conservation practices. This article explores various initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between Dalit communities and environmental conservation, highlighted the strategies for empowerment. The article adopted document analysis as a methodology of the study. The article begins by contextualizing the historical marginalization of Dalit communities within environmental movements, emphasizing the systemic barriers they face in accessing resources and decision-making processes. It underscores the importance of recognizing Dalit voices and agency in environmental conservation efforts. Drawing on examples from grassroots organizations and community-led initiatives, the article displays how Dalit communities are actively engaging in environmental conservation despite facing numerous challenges. These initiatives involve reclaiming land rights, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and advocating for environmental justice. Furthermore, the article discusses the role of education, capacity building, and policy advocacy in empowering Dalit communities to take leadership roles in environmental conservation. The study also provided recommendations for creating inclusive spaces within the environmental movement for addressing systemic barriers to meaningful participation and empowerment.Published
