Abstract

Breadcrumbing is a modern form of relational manipulation characterized by sporadic, superficial affection intended to sustain another's romantic interest without genuine commitment. Commonly perpetuated through digital communication, it affects many online daters. This behavior operates via variable ratio reinforcement, activating dopaminergic reward and attachment pathways that foster psychological dependence. Perpetrators often exhibit attachment insecurity, emotional dysregulation, and Dark Triad personality features, keeping victims in cycles of anticipation while avoiding genuine relational development. Victims frequently experience anxiety, depression, reduced self-worth, and learned helplessness, with some meeting criteria for adjustment or complex relational trauma. Clinical evaluation focuses on distinguishing breadcrumbing from authentic uncertainty by assessing patterns of responsibility, consistency, and investment. Effective interventions include psychoeducation on reinforcement mechanisms, attachment-based therapy, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and dialectical behavior therapy. Preventive measures emphasize promoting secure attachment models, digital relationship literacy, and early recognition of manipulative communication dynamics.
