Abstract

Narcissistic manipulation in close relationships represents a complex interplay of personality pathology, interpersonal dynamics, and psychological harm. Individuals with narcissistic traits or narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) employ a range of manipulative tacticssuch as gaslighting, idealization, devaluation cycles, and emotional coercionto maintain control and affirm self-esteem. These behaviours can lead to significant emotional distress, trauma bonding, and long-term psychological consequences for partners, family members, and colleagues. The clinical and theoretical foundations of narcissism are discussed, common manipulative strategies delineated, and their impact on victims’ mental health and relational functioning is examined. Further, diagnostic and assessment challenges, ethical and therapeutic considerations, and evidence-based approaches to treatment and recovery are highlighted. Recognizing and addressing narcissistic manipulation remains critical for clinicians to protect patient welfare and promote healthy relational boundaries.
