Abstract

Parental and family-based emotional manipulation refers to patterns of psychological control, guilt induction, coercion, and invalidation used within family systems to influence thoughts, emotions, or behaviours of other members, often to maintain power, dependency, or relational stability. Such manipulation can manifest through overt criticism, conditional affection, emotional neglect, or covert tactics like gaslighting and triangulation. While some degree of emotional influence is inherent to family life, pathological manipulation is characterized by persistent disregard for autonomy and emotional well-being. It is particularly damaging when enacted by primary caregivers, as it shapes attachment security, self-esteem, and affect regulation throughout development. Understanding these dynamics requires integrating developmental psychology, family systems theory, and personality psychopathology. This chapter examines the mechanisms, manifestations, and consequences of emotional manipulation within families, outlines clinical indicators and diagnostic overlaps, and explores evidence-based therapeutic strategies for addressing these issues. Emphasis is placed on promoting awareness, empathy, and resilience through systemic interventions and psychoeducation.
