Abstract

Emotional manipulation involves covert strategies used to control, exploit, or distort an individual’s emotional experience, often resulting in psychological harm, lowered self-esteem, and impaired decision-making. Victims of manipulation frequently experience trauma bonding, cognitive dissonance, and disruptions in identity and self-trust. The recovery process requires targeted therapeutic interventions that address both emotional trauma and cognitive restructuring. This paper examines the psychological impact of emotional manipulation and evaluates therapeutic approaches including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Informed Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Group-Based Healing models. The paper emphasizes the importance of boundary rebuilding, self-compassion, and reconnection with social support systems in fostering emotional autonomy and long-term recovery.
