Abstract

Wetlands at present are the burning requirements in the cities due to many facts; although one of them is very common and which is the role of wet lands in regulating water loggings in floods through acting as a major draining ground to absorb the water of floods. As most of the cities have developed through filling the sites which served as wet lands in one way or the other, the current problems faced by people is to cope up with the troubles generated in retaliation due to filling up of wet lands with lands for construction and in most instances the encroachment practices against the wet land areas. The wetlands have well been proclaimed as ecological needs. The Wetlands serve as the hub of biological diversities. Besides, the potential of the wetlands to serve as a Ramsar site for bird watching and conservation; the role of wetlands in recycling most of the wastes spilled into them in busy cities these days is also quite noticeable. The wetlands are also the breeding grounds of once weed species of plants and at present the most densely proliferating Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), the timely harvesting of which can also save the wetlands besides playing a role in economy; as the Water Hyacinth have been reported to have used in many commercial practices that can generate entrepreneurship. The Wetlands are also used as fishing grounds and therefore the same grounds used as spill over runs and fishing practices has emergently brought the pertinence of examining the ecological conditions in them.
