Abstract

Commerce as a discipline has witnessed continuous transformation in response to economic liberalization, technological advancement, globalization, and changing consumer expectations. In recent years, the scope of commerce has expanded far beyond traditional trade and distribution functions to include digital platforms, data-driven decision-making, sustainable business practices, and global value chain integration. These developments represent new directions in commerce that are reshaping business operations and redefining the role of commerce professionals. This chapter aims to examine the emerging directions in commerce by adopting a conceptual and analytical approach. It highlights the shift from conventional commerce practices to modern, innovation-led, and socially responsible models of business. The discussion emphasizes the role of technology, sustainability, and globalization in influencing contemporary commerce while also identifying key challenges and future opportunities. The chapter contributes to a deeper understanding of how commerce as a field is adapting to dynamic economic and technological environments.
