Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions a transformative approach in the education system of India, emphasizing the integration of value education to enhance holistic development among learners. The purpose of this policy is to cultivate ethical awareness, empathy, and respect for diversity, aligning with the practices of education with the wider goals of societal responsibility and emotional intelligence. NEP 2020 foster value education as a core component of the curricula, emphasizing its role in developing cognitive, emotional, and ethical dimensions of learners. Strategies include experiential learning, storytelling, and community engagement, which are designed to instill universal human values (UHV) across disciplines. Implementation faces several challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of trained teachers, and the need for substantial investment. However, the policy also presents some opportunities for interdisciplinary education that can enhance values-based learning and contribute to sustainable development. While NEP 2020 aims to create a values-driven education system, critics argue that without addressing systemic issues like resource allocation and teacher training, the vision may not be fully realized. In order to ensure that education promotes not only academic achievement but also social, emotional, and ethical growth, the vision is in line with the demands of the twenty-first century. Value education is therefore portrayed in NEP 2020 as a crucial means of producing responsible people and a fair, inclusive society.
