Abstract

Education is an important instrument to achieve sustainability in our society. Education is the only process that enables people to understand work for and benefit from sustainable development. Sustainable development is such a developmental process that fulfilthe needs and demands of the present without compromising the abilities of future generation to meet their specific needs. The basic principle behind sustainable development is an assemble of economic, social and environment conditions that are shared by all of us. In the context of education for sustainability, it utilizes the entire education system to provide students with what they need to do to change our society and to achieve a sustainable future. Sustainable development should also include an acknowledgement and respect for the positive heritage and leadership of past generation. Education for sustainable development is a very contemporary concept that includes a new vision of education that seeks to balance human and economic wellbeing with cultural traditions and respect for the earth’s natural resources. Education for sustainable development that emphasizes the importance of learning in the buildup the transition towards sustainability with additional education in citizenship, education, education for a culture of peace, gender equal opportunity, respect for human rights, health education, education for protecting and managing natural resources and many more. Consequently, education needs to be transformed into a constructive tool for creating awareness among the students and citizen of the world. Education for sustainable development is an interdisciplinary approach to develop ideas for the respect of nature beyond sustainable utilisation of natural resources. Though despite of its theoretical notion, it has more practical and applicable field through which society can able to sustain a social life and also to maintain an ecological balance.
