Abstract

In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, global interconnectedness, and complex socio-ecological challenges, the purpose of education is undergoing a critical re-evaluation. Moving beyond the traditional paradigm of knowledge transmission and skill acquisition, there is a growing consensus on the need for education to foster holistic human development. This paper argues that Value-Based Pedagogy (VBP) is central to this renewed purpose and that a systemic and intentional approach to preparing future teachers for this paradigm is an urgent imperative for teacher education programs. The current landscape of teacher training often prioritizes methodological competence, curriculum delivery, and standardized assessment, inadvertently marginalizing the explicit cultivation of universal human values such as empathy, integrity, respect, responsibility, and justice. This paper examines the foundational principles of VBP, positioning it not as an additive curriculum but as a transformative pedagogical framework that infuses the entire teaching and learning process with ethical and moral dimensions. It explores the core competencies required for value-based teaching, including reflective practice, ethical discernment, inclusive classroom management, and the ability to facilitate critical dialogues on controversial issues.
