Abstract

Hearing impairment can cause a delay in the acquisition of speech and language skills and speech and language skills is deemed to be important for the acquisition of literacy skills. The current book chapter collates the multitude of faced by children with hearing impairment in the literacy domain. The first challenge stems to the language acquisition deficits, language has direct bearing with literacy and communication barriers. This can also impose challenges to the teachers in terms of their preparedness, and psychosocial consequences. Evidence in this direction suggest that approximately 80% of the 34 million children with hearing impairment exhibit constraints starting from lack of access to appropriate educational services The first five years of life is considered to be vital for language acquisition and is termed as critical age; however, hearing impaired children experience auditory deprivation during the aforementioned years resulting in long lasting consequences extending beyond academic domains to cognitive, social-emotional, and vocational functioning (National Association of the Deaf, 2023).
