Abstract

Educational equity remains an elusive goal as marginalized learners continue to face multifaceted barriers that impede their access to quality learning opportunities. This chapter examines the systemic obstacles encountered by students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including economic constraints, geographical isolation, cultural discrimination, linguistic challenges, and institutional biases. Through a comprehensive analysis of contemporary research and practical interventions, the chapter explores how intersecting forms of marginalization compound educational disadvantage and perpetuate cycles of inequality. The discussion encompasses physical, economic, sociocultural, pedagogical, and technological barriers while highlighting evidence-based strategies for creating more inclusive learning environments. Particular attention is given to policy frameworks, institutional reforms, and community-based approaches that have demonstrated success in reducing access gaps. The chapter argues that addressing barriers requires coordinated efforts across multiple levels—from classroom practices to national policies—and emphasizes the importance of participatory approaches that center marginalized voices in solution design. By synthesizing theoretical frameworks with practical case studies, this chapter provides educators, policymakers, and educational leaders with actionable insights for dismantling barriers and fostering truly equitable access to education for all learners, regardless of their social, economic, or cultural background.
