Abstract

Ancient Indian thought presents a worldview in which environmental harmony is sustained through balanced interactions between humans and the natural world. This ecological ethic, reflected in Vedic concepts of order, restraint, and cyclical renewal, offers a meaningful lens for interpreting modern sustainability practices. In contemporary science, biochar—produced through the thermal conversion of renewable biomass—emerges as a practical material for long-term carbon retention and environmental improvement. Its porous structure, stability, and adaptable surface chemistry enable applications ranging from CO₂ adsorption to soil enhancement and pollutant removal. This chapter connects the philosophical foundations of Vedic environmental stewardship with current developments in biochar research, demonstrating how traditional ecological values can inform modern carbon management strategies. By situating biochar within both ancient ecological perspectives and present-day technological needs, the study highlights its relevance as a bridge between cultural wisdom and scientific innovation.
