Abstract

The chapter "Clean Energy for Sacred Sites: Transforming India’s Religious Tourism with Sustainable Policies" explores the intersection of renewable energy initiatives and religious tourism in India. With its rich tapestry of spiritual heritage and pilgrimage sites, India attracts millions of domestic and international tourists annually. This chapter argues for the integration of clean energy solutions in the management and development of these sacred sites to enhance their sustainability and reduce carbon footprints. It examines existing policies and practices related to energy use in the context of religious tourism, highlighting both the environmental challenges and opportunities for renewable energy adoption. By evaluating case studies of successful clean energy implementations in prominent pilgrimage destinations, this chapter illustrates how sustainable policies can address the energy needs of sacred sites while preserving their cultural integrity. Furthermore, it discusses the role of local communities, government initiatives, and technological innovations in driving the transition toward a green energy infrastructure. Ultimately, the chapter advocates for a holistic framework that aligns religious, environmental, and economic objectives to ensure the long-term viability of India’s religious tourism sector. This transformative approach not only aims to enhance the visitor experience but also promotes stewardship of sacred spaces in a rapidly changing ecological landscape.
