Abstract

Mathematics, often regarded as the purest form of logic and abstraction, has long served as a foundational pillar in science fiction narratives. From alien communication and multidimensional travel to AI consciousness and time manipulation, mathematical tropes in science fiction not only lend scientific plausibility but also explore philosophical, metaphysical, and epistemological questions. Mathematics has long held a curious place in science fiction—not just as a tool for scientific plausibility, but as a profound narrative force. This paper explores how science fiction uses mathematical ideas and symbols to tell stories that stretch the imagination, from communicating with aliens and navigating alternate dimensions to confronting paradoxes and probing the nature of time. Whether it's prime numbers signaling intelligent life in Contact or the eerie non-Euclidean geometries in Lovecraft’s mythos, math becomes more than numbers; it becomes a bridge between logic and the unknown. By examining literature, films, and television, this study delves into how mathematical tropes are used to question what we know, expand what we think is possible, and sometimes even to challenge our sense of reality. Ultimately, this analysis reveals that behind every equation or paradox in science fiction lies a deeper story—one about humanity’s ongoing effort to understand the cosmos and its place within it.
