FLIPPED CLASSROOMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION: IMPACT AND EFFECTIVENESS

Abstract

The flipped classroom emerged as an innovative pedagogical model in higher education, reversing the traditional sequence of in-class lectures and at-home assignments. In this approach, students engaged with instructional content—through video lectures, readings, or digital modules—prior to attending class, thereby allowing classroom time to be dedicated to active learning, discussions, problem-solving, and collaborative projects. This study examined the impact and effectiveness of flipped classrooms in higher education by reviewing existing research, case studies, and empirical evidence. Findings suggested that flipped classrooms fostered student-centered learning, improved engagement, enhanced critical thinking, and encouraged deeper understanding of subject matter. However, challenges such as increased preparation time for instructors, technological barriers, and varying levels of student adaptability remained significant concerns. Overall, the flipped classroom model demonstrated strong potential for improving academic performance and promoting learner autonomy when effectively integrated with sound instructional design and technological support.
