Abstract

In modern days, artificial intelligence (AI) has been a revolutionary force in education creating tremendous opportunities to improve teaching, personalise learning experiences and expand the scope of knowledge acquisition. Through adaptive educational platforms, intelligent tutoring systems and automated administrative processes, AI can democratise education and help bridge the existing digital divide. It can make education more inclusive, accessible and effective, especially for disadvantaged and resource-poor students. However, its promise also presents challenges. Uneven distribution of digital infrastructure, limited technical knowledge, high implementation costs and the risk of algorithmic bias may exacerbate inequalities in education rather than reduce them. In addition, concerns about data privacy, ethical governance and the marginalisation of the teacher role highlight the complexities of overreliance on AI-based education. This paper discusses both the advantages and disadvantages of using AI in education, and how it can act as both a catalyst for empowerment and a cause of discrimination. The main point of the discussion is that a balanced, ethical and context-sensitive strategy is essential for the successful application of AI in education. Otherwise, AI may become a source of exclusion rather than a tool for democratisation.
