Abstract

Spirituality has historically played a vital role in shaping human values, behaviour, and personality within Indian knowledge systems. This chapter explores the conceptual relationship between spirituality and conscientiousness, one of the major personality traits in modern psychological theory. Conscientiousness, characterized by responsibility, discipline, self-control, and goal-directed behaviour, shows strong parallels with core principles of Indian philosophy such as dharma (ethical duty), karma (action and accountability), and yogic self-discipline. Drawing upon classical philosophical texts and contemporary psychological perspectives, the chapter examines how spiritual practices foster self-regulation, moral awareness, and persistence, thereby contributing to personality development and well-being. The discussion also highlights the role of spirituality in cultivating the ethical self, promoting social responsibility, and enhancing psychological resilience. It is argued that integrating insights from Indian philosophical traditions and personality psychology provides a holistic framework for understanding conscientious behaviour and character formation in educational and social contexts.
