Abstract

India, a nation with over 22 officially recognized languages, presents a unique case study for exploring the complex relationships between language, education, and societal development. This paper examines the role of education in shaping multilingual societies in India, with a focus on the ways in which language policies and practices in educational institutions influence linguistic diversity and social cohesion. Drawing on a critical analysis of existing literature and empirical research, this study highlights the challenges and opportunities presented by India's linguistic diversity, and argues that education has a critical role to play in promoting linguistic inclusivity, social equity, and national integration. The findings of this study have important implications for language education policy and practice in India and beyond.
