Abstract

The Gurukula system of education, a pillar of ancient Indian culture, embodies a holistic approach to education that emphasizes the academic, physical, mental and spiritual growth of the individual. Using a qualitative research design and a thorough literature review, this study examines the applicability of the gurukula system in modern education. The aim of this study is to explore the basic principles of the Gurukula system, to identify the holistic learning practices inspired by it, to compare its educational practices with the modern system and to analyze its relevance in the present era. The findings reveal that the Gurukul system prioritizes teacher-student relationships, value-based learning, experiential learning and a harmonious connection with nature, which collectively contribute to the holistic development of students. Even as modern education is technologically advanced, it often ignores these important factors in favor of standardized testing and academic achievement. A more balanced approach to education can be promoted by filling these gaps by incorporating the principles of the Gurukul system. This research suggests the ongoing relevance of the gurukula system in addressing contemporary issues including moral education, sustainability and emotional intelligence. The study concluded that by integrating its concepts into modern educational frameworks, a more thorough, meaningful and impactful learning experience can be achieved.
