Abstract

Stress and trauma are closely interconnected phenomena that influence human functioning across biological, psychological, and social domains. Stress is a natural adaptive response that enables individuals to cope with environmental demands and challenges. However, when stress becomes chronic or overwhelming, particularly in the context of traumatic experiences, it can lead to serious mental health consequences. Trauma occurs when individuals are exposed to events that exceed their coping capacity and threaten their sense of safety and stability. In some cases, persistent trauma-related symptoms develop into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a clinically recognized condition characterized by intrusive memories, avoidance behaviors, negative changes in mood and cognition, and heightened physiological arousal. Research indicates that PTSD is associated with neurobiological changes involving the amygdala, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. Despite these challenges, effective treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacological interventions, can support recovery. Understanding stress, trauma, and PTSD within a biopsychosocial framework is essential for improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
