Abstract

The experience of anxiety related to identity formation and personal growth has become increasingly prominent among adolescents and young adults. Often expressed as a fear of not being “there yet” in life, this anxiety reflects concerns about achievement, self-definition, belonging, and future uncertainty. This review paper examines the psychological underpinnings of the anxiety of becoming, drawing on developmental, cognitive, humanistic, and sociocultural perspectives. The paper explores how societal expectations, comparison culture, academic and career pressures, and internalized ideals contribute to persistent self-doubt and distress. By synthesizing existing literature, the review highlights how anxiety related to becoming is shaped by both internal psychological processes and external social forces, and discusses implications for mental health support and intervention.
