Child and adolescent psychopathology is a specialized field that examines how mental health disorders originate, develop, and manifest during childhood and adolescence. Instead of considering childhood disorders as fixed or permanent conditions, this area of study is guided by the developmental psychopathology perspective, which views psychological problems as deviations from normal developmental pathways that change over time. Unlike adult clinical psychology, which often focuses on relatively stable personality traits, this field emphasizes developmental change, environmental influences, and the dynamic nature of psychological growth throughout early life. Researchers typically adopt a biopsychosocial perspective, recognizing the interaction among biological predispositions, psychological processes, and environmental contexts. Genetic factors interact with life experiences to influence brain development, emotional regulation, and behavior. Two key principles—equifinality and multifinality—explain how different risk factors may lead to the same disorder or how a single factor may produce diverse outcomes. Early identification and timely intervention are therefore essential for fostering resilience and promoting healthy development.Published
