Abstract

Early detection of developmental delays and learning disorders is essential for optimizing neurodevelopmental outcomes and enhancing long-term functional independence in children. Developmental delays may affect motor, cognitive, language, social, and adaptive domains, whereas learning disabilities interfere with academic achievement despite average intellectual ability and adequate educational exposure. Emerging evidence from developmental neuroscience emphasizes the importance of early screening, prompt referral, and timely intervention during critical periods of brain plasticity, when neural circuits are most responsive to therapeutic input. Physiotherapy plays a pivotal role in early intervention by promoting motor skill acquisition, postural stability, coordination, balance, sensory integration, and participation in age-appropriate functional activities. Evidence-based, task-oriented, and play-based approaches further support active engagement and functional independence. Multidisciplinary collaboration among pediatricians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and educators enhances individualized care planning and improves long-term academic and social outcomes. This chapter explores the scope, assessment strategies, intervention models, benefits, challenges, policy implications, and future directions in the early identification and physiotherapeutic management of developmental delays and learning disabilities.
