Abstract

The rapid development and integration of digital technologies and social media have profoundly impacted the world in terms of communication, social interactions, and information exchange. For instance, social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok have become essential in our daily lives, especially among adolescents and young adults. Although digital technologies provide means for social connectivity, information exchange, and mental health support, the existing evidence suggests that excessive and maladaptive use may have a negative impact on mental health. Studies have shown that excessive use of social media may be associated with increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, and sleep disorders. Psychological factors like social comparison, cyberbullying, fear of missing out, and validation-seeking may be responsible for these mental health outcomes. On the other hand, social media and digital technologies provide opportunities for mental health support via digital media. This chapter explores the complex interplay between digital technologies and mental health, including the benefits and risks.
