Abstract

The socio-cultural perspective on mental illness holds that social structures, cultural norms, interpersonal relationships, and environmental factors have a significant impact on the genesis, appearance, course, and treatment of psychological diseases. This perspective goes beyond purely biological and intrapsychic explanations of mental health and situates it within broader systems of meaning, power, and social organization. Mental health disparities are largely caused by structural factors such as socioeconomic disparity, discrimination, gender norms, and social exclusion, but cultural beliefs also influence how symptoms appear, how people seek care, and how stigma is perceived. This chapter covers the theoretical foundations, cross-cultural differences, social determinants, stigma and labeling processes, socio-cultural influence mechanisms, and implications for mental health policy and clinical practice. Here is a lot of focus on culturally sensitive care and how to use socio-cultural knowledge in modern psychological frameworks.
