Abstract

Mental health promotion and rehabilitation are essential components of modern healthcare systems. With the increasing global burden of psychological disorders, preventive strategies and structured rehabilitation programs are necessary to address both psychological and physical dimensions of health. Historically, mental health management focused primarily on psychiatric intervention and medication. However, contemporary practice emphasizes a holistic and multidisciplinary approach that integrates physiotherapy, psychology, occupational therapy, social work, and community-based rehabilitation services. This chapter explores the role of physiotherapy in mental health promotion, including exercise therapy, relaxation techniques, posture correction, pain management, and functional rehabilitation. It further examines the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in managing depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, psychosomatic illnesses, and geriatric mental health conditions. By combining physical rehabilitation with psychosocial interventions and preventive strategies, mental health services can improve quality of life, enhance resilience, and restore functional independence. The chapter discusses scope, conceptual foundations, research approaches, applications, benefits, policy implications, challenges, and future directions in mental health promotion and rehabilitation.
