GURUKUL AND MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM IN INDIA: A LESSON FOR HOLISTIC LEARNING

The Gurukul system, a pillar of ancient Indian education, is a perfect example of holistic learning approach by the integration of academic, moral, and spiritual growth. The basic principles of gurukul education system were mentorship, community living, and experiential learning. It was helpful for not only intellectual development but also emotional, social, and ethical well-being. In the era of digital revolution and standard curricula, the ancient Gurukul education system in India plays a vital role for al-round development of the individual as well as the society. This paper explores the basic principles and practices of the Gurukul system of Education in India. It also tries to explore the impact of Gurukul education system on NEP 2020 and its applications for reshaping the modern Indian Education. In this study, the data were collected mainly from secondary sources. This study explores the influence of spirituality on education and how it shapes the character of individuals in ancient India. Additionally, it examines the impact of the Gurukul system of education on various aspects of modern Indian education, as reflected in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, including integrated curriculum and holistic learning, experiential learning, ethical and moral training, the teacher-student relationship, connection with nature, and service to societal welfare.Published
