Lifelong learning is a vital concept in currentera, focussing the ongoing and self-directed journey of gaining knowledge, values, skills, and expertise throughout an individual’s lifespan. This idea covers wide range of learning environments, including formal education, workplace training, social interactions, community involvement, online platforms, and hands-on experiences. Global policy frameworks are increasingly recognizing lifelong learning as essential for sustainable development. Organizations such as UNESCO champion it as a fundamental human right that fosters social inclusion, while the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) connects adult education to innovation, productivity, and job readiness. These viewpoints emphasize both the economic and human-centred aspects of lifelong learning. At its core, lifelong learning is built on three main principles: first, it highlights the idea that learning is a lifelong process; second, it emphasizes the importance of learner agency, where adults take charge of their own learning journeys with choice and motivation; and third, it reflects the variety of contexts in which learning occurs.Published
